SUMMARY:Fika Duo: IGF Young Artists Platform
DESCRIPTION:This concert is promoted in partnership with the International Guitar Foundation (IGF). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Fika Duo was formed in September 2023 by guitarist Zoë Meadowcroft and flautist Emma Lörstad in their first year at the Royal Academy of Music\, where they both hold scholarships. Since their debut performance at the Academy\, they have aimed to build a unique concert repertoire through new arrangements and collaborations with composers\, including new works written by Zoë\, as well as highlighting under-represented areas of the existing repertoire. \n\n\n\nThe name ‘Fika Duo’ comes from the Swedish tradition of ‘fika’\, to take a break in one’s day to enjoy a cup of coffee or tea and something sweet – Emma and Zoë’s secret weapon for long rehearsals. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProgramme\n\n\n\nASTOR PIAZZOLLA (1921–1992)Histoire du Tangoi. SUMMARY:June 2025 Meetup and Composition Competition
DESCRIPTION:Theme: Own arrangement or composition (£100 first prize\, £50 second prize!)\, or if not participating in the competition: music from a living composer. \nThis month we have a special competition — play your own composition or arrangement\, and be in the running to win a £100 voucher/prize for the best own composition or arrangement\, as voted for by the members in attendance on the night. Terms and conditions apply! \n\nIt must be your own composition or arrangement\, written or finished in 2025\nYou must not have used this composition as an entry for any previous competition (including outside BCGS)\nYou consent to a video or recording of your composition going on the BCGS website\nIf it’s an arrangement\, it should be fairly novel\, rather than just slight tweaks on a common arrangement (e.g. just a different key)\nOnly active playing members of the BCGS are eligible to participate\nFirst prize £100\, and £50 and a set of D’Addario strings as a prize for the runner-up!\n\nWe don’t anticipate a huge number of entries\, so alternatively\, just play something by a living composer — but you won’t be in line for the prizes! \n19:15-19:45 Solos and chamber ensembles \n19:45-20:00 Member’s Short Talk Cari Aplin: How to practice guitar \n20:00-20:50 Guest Speaker: Steve Toon\, Guitar Maker Steve will talk about his general approach to guitar making and his more recent excursions into double-top guitars. Also about the way he developed his ideas on this type of guitar and all being well he will bring one new guitar for a demo. \n21:00-22:00 BCGS Ensemble Rehearsal

Notable among these are the International Guitar Competition Michele Pittaluga in Alessandria\, Italy\, the Andrés Segovia International Guitar Competition in Spain\, the Nikita Koshkin International Guitar Competition in Austria\, and the Leo Brouwer International Guitar Competition in Havana\, Cuba.\n\nAs a renowned soloist\, Tamayo regularly collaborates with chamber music ensembles\, performing a vast and stylistically diverse repertoire. He also serves as a president of jury panels and organises guitar festivals\, having gained considerable experience from a young age. More recently\, his interest in composition has led him to create new works for the guitar.\n\nTamayo began playing guitar at the age of three\, was hailed as a prodigy at six\, and embarked on his first international tour in Europe at just ten years old\, performing in Germany (former DDR) and Bulgaria.\n\nHis extensive teaching career includes professorships at Sydney University in Australia\, the Gustav Mahler Privat Universität in Austria\, the Mozarteum University of Arts in Salzburg\, Austria\, and the Academy of Arts in Gdańsk\, Poland. Most recently\, he was selected from over 400 applicants to join the UDK Berlin faculty\, where his class attracts guitarists from around the world\, many of whom have become prominent performers.\n\nTamayo’s influential book\, Essential Principles for the Interpretation on the Classical Guitar\, has reshaped classical guitar pedagogy globally.\n\nHe has served as the Artistic Director of the Michele Pittaluga International Guitar Competition since 1999\, the year he won the competition\, and he founded the Klagenfurt International Guitar Competition and Festival in Austria\, which ran until 2020. Tamayo is also an Honorary Citizen of the cities of Solero and Alessandria\, Italy.\n\nCurrently\, Tamayo performs on a guitar built by American luthier Stephen Connor and is a Savarez artist\, using Cantiga Premium-Alliance/Blue strings. He is the Chairman of Marco Tamayo Edition\, a publishing house he founded in 2014. In 2024\, he launched his latest project\, Tamayo’s Masterclasses\, an online platform designed to share his knowledge through performances and analyses of famous and foundational guitar works.

SUMMARY:Berta Rojas Masterclasses and visit
DESCRIPTION:We’re really excited that Berta Rojas\, our society’s Patron\, is coming to visit us on 25th August 2024 to meet our members and offer the opportunity for masterclasses on the day! \nThis year Berta is a guest and concert artist at the West Dean Guitar Summer School near Chichester from 17 – 22 Aug 2024. Additionally\, Berta will be giving a concert there on Mon 19 Aug at 8pm. If you wish to see the concert then tickets are available at https://www.tickettailor.com/events/westdeansussexevents/1173765. \nUnfortunately\, we are unable to hold a BCGS concert with Berta this year. However\, we are taking advantage of the fact that Berta is in the UK to hold a workshop and masterclasses with members from the BCGS and WAGO on Sunday 25 Aug 2024. \nThe visit of Berta to BCGS/WAGO will take place at the Hewish & Puxton Village Hall (near Weston-super-Mare and the home of WAGO) on Sunday 25 Aug 2024 from 10am to 4pm. There is easy car access and free parking available at the village hall. Free Wifi is also available. \nThe timetable for the day is as follows: \n\n10:00 WAGO Workshop\n11:15 coffee break\n11:45 WAGO workshop\n13:00 Lunch (an opportunity to chat to Berta) – a full lunch is only available to WAGO members – drinks and snacks to others will be available.\n14:00 BCGS/WAGO Masterclasses (includes a short coffee break)\n16:00 Close (the hall is available until 5pm if we get more masterclass\ncandidates)\n\nBCGS members are invited to attend as a spectator for some or all of the day (including the WAGO workshop)\, and/or to take part in a Masterclass with Berta. You do not have to consider yourself as a master guitarists to have a masterclass\, or have learnt a really challenging piece of music\, but you should have something reasonably well prepared whatever the difficulty of the music. Better to think of the masterclass as a short public lesson with a great concert guitarist\, than some master performance by yourself. \nWe also welcome members of the general public as spectators (£10). \nThere will be a small cost to those who attend\, dependent on what part an individual intends to undertake during the day: \n\nTo attend all\, or some of the day as a spectator\, is £10 (includes coffee\, tea\, snacks etc). This is open to BCGS members\, their guests\, and the general public.\nTo play in a 20 min masterclass with Berta £30. If you pay for a masterclass then you will not be charged the £10 to spectate for any other parts of the day. Masterclass slots are only available for WAGO and BCGS members.\nYou may bring guests with you who are not BCGS members\, but they too will need to pay £10 to observe.\n\nIf you’d like to attend\, either as an audience member or take part in the masterclass\, please let\nVince know as soon as possible. He needs to plan the timetable\, manage costs\, and supply refreshments!
